Central Place Theory

Why New Jersey Doesn't Have a Big City

Cities organize around industry. That industry could be manufacturing, financial services, logistics, government, etc. They serve different size populations depending on how and how often customers need to make contact with those service providers. For example,

you may see a grocery store for every 10,000 people, medical services clustered around a Level 1 Trauma Center for every 2 million people, and clustered financial services for every 20 million.
